Sam Lazerov Scholarship



The Indianapolis AERO Club will be awarding two scholarships during the summer of 2018 for students who think they may be interested in Aeronautical Engineering.  One scholarship will be awarded for the 2017 EAA Air Academy at Oshkosh, WI (world’s greatest fly-in) and one scholarship will be awarded for one of the several sessions during the summer of 2018 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center at Huntsville, AL.  These scholarships include all food and lodging costs of the aviation camps.  Transportation to and from the camps is the responsibility of the winning candidate’s parents.  Either scholarship winning candidate, whether it be at Oshkosh or Huntsville will be exposed to the wonders of the field of Aeronautics and will begin to understand the importance of quick, sound, decision making.

Candidates must be between 16-18 years old during the 2018 summer.  The candidate must be in good health and not have attended the aviation camp in any prior year.

At camp the winning candidate can expect to learn:

  • Fundamentals of flight
  • Flight controls and systems
  • Navigation and weather
  • Flight training requirements
  • Aircraft construction basics
  • Hands-on techniques of builders
  • Flight history
  • Fly simulators
  • Visit the EAA museum

The candidate may possibly even fly with an instructor.

Here, there are two opportunities for the winning candidate to choose from:

Advanced Space Academy-ages 15-18
Mission Specialists will train like real astronauts by conducting scientific experiments on board the shuttle while performing extra vehicular activities during the mission.   Pilots will learn the detailed workings of the orbiter flight deck as well as launch, orbit, and re-entry procedures.  These specialty tracks, coupled with the advanced astronaut training program, will put you on your way to understanding the various careers and opportunities that await you in the future.

 Aviation Challenge Mach III-ages 15-18
Be the Best of the Best. Learn from real pilots and military aviators what it takes to stand up to the challenge, as your team deploys to the U.S.S. Nimitz.   Your simulated training is fast paced and there is no room for second best.   Mach III includes simulator experience in high performance jet simulators and intense survival skills.  Step up as a team to make the grade during competitive missions, Seal ops and Top Gun.

In order to be considered for either of these approximately one-week long scholarship to the Oshkosh EAA camp or the Huntsville, AL U.S. Space and Rocket Center-Advanced Space Academy or the Aviation Challenge Mach III Camp, the following information must be assembled:

            Fill out the attached application and be sure to include:

  1. A 1-2 page letter describing your background and interest in aviation,
  2. At least two letters of recommendation (no family members please)
  3. Scholastic information (Aug-Dec, 2017 grades and overall GPA)
